Nintendo drops Wii online channels

Nintendo has announced it will be dropping several Wii online services in the summer as it focuses on the next generation

Nintendo is planning to close down several of the Wii's online channels, the company revealed today.
The gaming giant clearly wants to focus on the future as it announced several closures including the message boards.
It's also calling time on the Nintendo Channel, News Channel, Forecast Channel, Everybody Votes Channel and the Mii Contest Channel.
"We at Nintendo sincerely thank you for your continued patronage of our company’s products," the company posted on its website.
"We would like to inform you that a portion of the online services offered through the Wii console will be discontinued from 28th June 2013."
Sad stuff, we know. But at least the Wii Shop Channel will remain available for the time being.
Nintendo is presumably trying to steer the focus away from the Wii and towards its next generation Wii U console.
The company has also released the Wii Mini - a stripped down version of the original console with no online functionality at all.
This isn't just a regional issue either - Nintendo is pulling the plug on these services across Europe, and has given the same statement on its Japanese site.
The big N is also due to reveal its annual results later this month.
